Tell Your Senator – No More Conflict Minerals!
The demand for valuable minerals from Congo – used in everyday electronics – is fueling ongoing conflict and finances armed groups who commit horrific atrocities. If passed, this bill would provide the authority and direction for the US government to help ensure that the mineral trade stops contributing to these atrocities. Click here to learn more. Tell Your Representative - No More Conflict Minerals!
The Conflict Minerals Trade Act of 2009 (HR 4128), introduced to the House of Representatives by Rep. James McDermott, would help develop the means to ensure that the multi-million dollar trade in minerals from eastern Congo stops financing the world’s deadliest war since WWII. Urge your representative to cosponsor the Conflict Minerals Trade Act! Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Representative. A sample script is below:
"As a constituent, I would like to urge you to cosponsor the Conflict Minerals Trade Act of 2009 (HR. 4128). This bipartisan bill is the strongest effort to date that addresses the scourge of conflict minerals in Congo. The bill is a valuable first step toward neutralizing one of the key drivers of the conflict in eastern Congo and ensuring American consumers that their electronics purchases are not financing crimes against humanity."
Stop Conflict Minerals!
The conflict in eastern Congo is being fueled by a multi-million dollar trade in minerals that go into our electronic products from cell phones to digital cameras. Electronics companies are unlikely to change their tune unless we show them that there is a large market of US consumers that want their products to be conflict free. Jewish World Watch has worked in coalition with other like-minded groups to create a conflict minerals pledge that commits electronics companies to ensure their products are conflict-free.
