International Action - China and Sudan!

China has a significant economic, military and political relationship with Sudan. This means that the Chinese government has more of a chance of influencing Sudan's leaders than practically any other country in the world. Read more

  • Join a vigil! Leading up to the Beijing Olympics, JWW is holding monthly vigils outside the Chinese consulate in Los Angeles to pressure China into using its political power to help the situation in Darfur. Click here to let us know you're interested in joining!
  • Urge China to use its influence with Sudan to bring an end to the genocide in Darfur. Write to Chinese Ambassador to the US, Zhou Wenzhong at:

Federal Action - Secure Peace, Protection and Punishment in Sudan!

Three critical challenges must be met to end the genocide in Sudan:

  • Peace : There must be a sustainable peace process in Sudan.
  • Protection : Refugees need the immediate protection of UN-African Union peacekeepers.
  • Punishment : The Sudanese government must bear the cost of continuing its crimes in Darfur, and be accountable to the International Criminal Court.

Take Action!

The U.S. can make Peace, Protection & Punishment possible. Write or call the White House and urge the President to:

  • Ensure that the U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan works full time to negotiate a peace
process, with a full-time diplomatic team supporting his efforts.
  • Ensure that the United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission is fully funded and immediately deployed.
  • Promote targeted, multilateral sanctions on Sudan through the U.N. Security Council. The US should also turn over any information that could support prosecutions by the International Criminal Court.

State Action - Support AB 1089!

The Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act (SADA), passed unanimously by Congress in 2007, authorizes states to enact laws prohibiting government contracts with certain "worst offender" companies operating in Sudan. AB 1089, introduced under SADA, will prohibit the state of California from entering into new or renewed business contracts with companies that help fund the genocide in Darfur .

Download AB 1089 Fact Sheet

Help us support contract bans in California! Unless laws are passed to prohibit the state of California from signing such contracts, your tax dollars will go to these companies. Act now to help California send a message to Khartoum and its financial supporters!

  • Individuals : Call CA State Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Torlakson at (916) 651-4007 and urge him to support this important legislation!
  • Organizations : Contact JWW to add your organization's name to our sign on letter, supporting AB 1089. Click here to read the letter.

Local Action - Divest from Darfur!

JWW has worked successfully with many public investors to support divestment from Sudan.   Now, JWW wants advocates to work with other cities to encourage them to do the same.   Learn more about divestment here.

  1. Check Your Portfolio: Use the Sudan Divestment Task Force's screening tool to ensure you are not investing in companies that help Sudan fund its genocide in Darfur. Ask your investment advisor to assess your portfolio and divest from any "worst offender" companies or mutual funds that hold their stocks.
  2. Engage Offenders : If your mutual fund is exposed to any of the offending companies in Sudan, consider sending a letter to your mutual fund manager or company, asking them to remove the offending companies. Download sample letter here.
  3. Consider Making a Move: If your mutual fund manager or company refuses to remove the offending companies from the fund, consider replacing it with a mutual fund that does not have holdings in any of the offending companies. Several socially and fiscally responsible companies are eager to have your investment business. Let them know genocide doesn't pay by sending a letter explaining why you are switching investments. Download sample letter here.

Genocide is Bad Business! A new quantitative analysis from the Sudan Divestment Task Force has found that corporations targeted for divestment in Sudan collectively underperformed their peer group over time. Click here for the full report.
