Dear Ambassador Wang Guangya,

I am writing to commend your leadership, as Chinese Ambassador to the UN, for the month of July, in assuring the unanimous passage of UN Security Council Resolution 1769.   This resolution is essential in bringing desperately needed protection to the people of Darfur.

In authorizing the use of force by peacekeepers under a Chapter VII mandate, you have led the world community in taking an essential step towards protecting the innocent. The UN-AU hybrid mission in Darfur stands as the first real and tangible progress on the road to peace, and I applaud your efforts in leading its historic passage.

I ask you now to ensure the full and immediate implementation of Resolution 1769. With thousands dying each month and millions more already displaced, we urge you to work towards Security Council authorization to deploy peacekeepers as they are recruited. I also ask you to maintain constant pressure on Khartoum to cooperate with the international community in ending the crisis in Darfur. Given China's significant economic and political relationship with Sudan, you have the unique opportunity to ensure that Sudan allow immediate deployment of this essential peacekeeping force.
