CHINESE AMBASSADOR TO THE UN, WANG GUANGYA

Dear Ambassador Wang Guangya,

I write to urge the government of China, as Sudan's closest ally, to act with integrity by taking concrete actions to help end the genocide in Darfur.

While I thank you for your support of the creation of UNAMID and for your pledge to send up to 300 military engineers to the mission, China must do more to bring peace to this ravaged region. I am particularly disheartened that your government continues to supply 90% of the small arms sold annually to Sudan. As you know, many of these weapons have been found in Darfur, despite the current arms embargo.

I join with others around the world in demanding that China act responsibly and address the continued flow of weapons to Sudan as it assumes the Presidency of the UN Security Council on October 1. I urge you to introduce a UN Security Council resolution to strengthen and expand the current arms embargo. I also implore you to:

  • Publicly condemn the violence in Darfur;
  • Issue a public statement announcing that China will end the sale of all small arms to Sudan, and;
  • Influence the government of Sudan to comply with all existing U.N. Security Council resolutions and immediately facilitate the rapid and full deployment of UNAMID.

Sincerely,
