Imagining the Unimaginable: Filmmakers Respond to Genocide

 
 

FREE ADMISSION. OPEN TO ALL. A weekend of screenings and discussions will explore how filmmakers have depicted humanity's response to genocide. On Saturday, The Long Way Home, the Academy Award-winning documentary about the Holocaust of European Jews, will be paired with The Killing Fields, the Oscar-winning feature film about the Cambodian genocide. The Sunday screenings will feature the prize-winning documentary Darfur Now and the acclaimed dramatic feature Hotel Rwanda, recounting the continuing atrocities in Darfur and the mass murders in Rwanda, respectively. In between the screenings, discussions with the filmmakers will focus on the challenges storytellers face when they confront horrors of this magnitude. Panelists will include Ted Braun, writer/director of Darfur Now; Terry George, co-writer/director of Hotel Rwanda; Mark Jonathan Harris, writer/director of The Long Way Home; and Bruce Robinson, writer of The Killing Fields. Organized by Ted Braun and Mark Jonathan Harris (School of Cinematic Arts). Co-sponsored by the USC Shoah Foundation Institute for Visual History and Education and USC's Center for Religion and Civic Culture.

Olympic Dream for Darfur National Torch Run

 

JWW lead the team (with the Save Darfur Coalition and Olympic Dream for Darfur) for the Los Angeles leg of their Torch Relay, a nation-wide event highlighting China's unique responsibility to lead the world in ending the genocide in Darfur. Over 150 activists joined us as we passed the torch between survivors of past genocides and Olympic athletes, and called on China to "Bring the Olympic Dream to Darfur."

Mitzvah Day

 

This Mitzvah Day synagogues throughout Los Angeles worked to support of the JWW Backpack Project.

The Backpack Project was created so that children in the Oure Cassoni refugee camp in Chad could attend schools run by our partner, the International Rescue Committee. Filled with shoes, books, school supplies, soap and toothpaste, the backpacks allow each child to make the most of school under the most difficult of circumstances.

Join us for a screening of this powerful documentary, which traces the stories of three of the 25,000 "lost boys" who fled villages, formed surrogate families and sought refuge from famine, diseases, wild animals and attacks from government soldiers during the Second Sudanese Civil War. STORIES FROM DARFUR - DR. BOB LINDEN AND MAUREEN ORR, DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS

 

Former West L.A. resident, Dr. Bob Linden and his wife, Maureen Orr, FNP, joined Doctors Without Borders and accepted an assignment to work in West Darfur, Sudan in 2006, during the genocide. Their photo presentation will include their experience.

This event is co-sponsored by Jewish World Watch, University Synagogue, Leo Baeck Temple, and Temple Ahavat Torah.

On June 3rd, 400 members of the community joined Jewish World Watch to raise awareness, hope and support for the survivors of the Darfur genocide. The three-mile walk on Sunday, June 3 raised over $14,000 for JWW education and advocacy projects and toward aid for refugees escaping violence in Darfur.
