The Solar Cooker Project is currently operating in four camps in eastern Chad, serving nearly 100,000 Darfuri...

The Solar Cooker Project is currently operating in four camps in eastern Chad, serving nearly 100,000 Darfuri refugees there.

Having fled the violence of the genocide in Darfur, more than 250,000 refugees have been living in the camps of eastern Chad for almost 10 years. The genocide in Darfur continues – and has spread to other regions of Sudan. It is still not safe for the refugees to return home.

The Solar Cooker Project has provided critical support to the refugees, offering an alternative fuel source to scarce firewood. Collecting that firewood requires long, often dangerous trips outside the bounds of the refugee camps.

We’re proud to announce that we’ve recently received a grant of $300,000 over three years from an anonymous foundation to help us expand the SCP even further.

This grant, and your continued support, will not only let us serve even more Darfuri women with this critical project, but also to undertake important research into different models and methods of solar cooking, to evaluate our current programs and to advocate for solar cooking as a key part of an integrated, sustainable cooking system for the women of the refugee camps.

In December 2012, JWW Board Members Janice Kamenir-Reznik and Diana Buckhantz had the opportunity to visit the SCP in the Farchana refugee camp. As you can imagine, it was an intense and eye-opening experience for them both. Both women kept kept and published travel journals from their trip to Chad. You can read Janice’s here and Diana’s here.

This PSA was gifted to Jewish World Watch to support the Solar Cooker Project. It was created by Righteous Conversations Participants Harry Davids, Rebecca Hutman, Nick Lieberman, Tamar Shine, and India Wilson in December 2012. We send our deep gratitude to the whole team at Righteous Conversations for creating this beautifully stark and tremendously moving piece. Visit them at righteousconversations.org. JWW plans to use this PSA to launch an upcoming Solar Cooker Project campaign. It will be a great tool for all of our activists!

One of our student activists wrote the following poem for the Walk to End Genocide, and she...

One of our student activists wrote the following poem for the Walk to End Genocide, and she wanted to make sure that it was available to the whole JWW community. Please take a moment to read about her and her work.

About the Poet, in her own words:

My name is Julia Wunsch and I am in the 11th grade. I live in Los Angeles, CA and I am currently the head of my Temple Youth Group’s team (HRTY, from Temple Beth Hillel in Valley Village) for the upcoming LA JWW Walk. I am also Social Action President of HRTY’s Board.

I am extremely passionate about raising awareness about the genocide occurring in Sudan and the Congo, and I have realized that there are a variety of creative methods that can be utilized to reach out to people in order to do so. In my efforts to raise money for the upcoming LA Walk on April 14, I combined my love for poetry with my passion to create positive social change. I wrote a poem for my team’s Facebook page which my team members found very powerful.

ENOUGH

When the Holocaust was finally over,

And six million Jews had perished,

We swore to ourselves and future generations,

That their memories would forever be cherished.

We promised to make a difference,

And told our people “Never again”.

Yet the genocide in Sudan and the Congo,

Is an ongoing atrocity which seems to have no end.

Neglect by the Sudanese government has forced it’s people,

To live without resources and land.

While the the government has sent armed militia called the Janjaweed,

Their men wage violence, rape women, and steal all they can.

Scorched earth tactics are frequently used,

To burn hundreds of African tribes’ homes.

Rebel groups have risen up to fight for their rights,

Yet are silenced and remain alone.

Alone in their fight to survive in this world,

Where we promised to create change.

Our willingness to stand idly by,

Simply makes no sense and is quite strange.

If we aim to honor the memories of our families

Who perished under Hitler’s regime,

We must realize the genocide occurring in Africa

Is more similar to the Holocaust than it seems.
