|
| Project: This summer I went to Camp Ramah, on one of the days, Jewish World Watch came and shared about what was happening in Darfur. I never knew it would get that bad, but I did know I had to take action. As soon as I got back from camp I started planning my fundraiser. I talked with an employee of JWW named Mina to discuss further planning. Mina deserves a huge thanks because she helped me set up this fundraiser. I kept thinking and I had to scratch the first few ideas, but I came across a brilliant one. I planned to have it at Ultrazone. Everyone loves Laser Tag, so I decided to have it there. When the date came for the fundraiser, I was filled with so much excitement. We were playing Laser tag for Darfur! That was cool. So many people came and we raised over $500 for Darfur. I was so happy we are able to help Darfur. Thank you so much Jewish World Watch, I am now planning the next fundraiser to come soon. |

Senior Margot Hershman brought in Solar Cookers and with the class they decided to host bake sales and t-shirt sales, have petitions go around campus, and raising awareness in the community. Apryl Giraudon wrote a wonderful article in the link. |

| Project: 13-year-old Noah Sutton-Smolin’s first name—like that of the biblical Ark-builder—means “comfort.” That being the case, young Sutton-Smolin set his sights higher than his name. His bar mitzvah project was intended not to merely comfort the refugee women of Sudan, but in many cases, to prevent them from being afflicted in the first place by raising money for the Solar Cooker Project. |

| Organization/Schoool: Congregation Beth Judah |
| Location: Ventnor, NJ |
| Activism in the areas of: Education, Refugee Relief |
|
| Project: When Yonah Bromberg Gaber’s bar mitzvah was approaching he considered his Torah portion which read, ” When you gather your harvest of your land, do not complete it to the corners of your field; and when you gather your harvest, harvest so that the poor and the stranger will have gleanings left for them; I am the Lord your God: Leviticus: 23:22 (Parshat Emor) It resonated with him. He had been introduced to the genocide in Darfur in 2006 and since then had been concerned with the situation. When he discovered the SCP project he said, “I was excited because it aids the refugees from Darfur and because it is a renewable energy, one of my interests.” He read Not On Our Watch by Don Cheadle and John Prendergast and watched the movie ‘Hotel Rwanda,’ both of which reinforced his decision to do something to help. He wrote a letter to his family and friends asking them to support the SCP. Mazel Tov Yonah and keep up the good work! |

He came up with selling painted spoons and selling them for six dollars each. | Project: “Potholders for Peace” created by University Synagogue’s Director of Education, Norma Grinfeld, was an effort to bring “age appropriate” awareness about Darfur in the Religious School classroom. The key focus was to use the life preserving solar cookers as a way of teaching students about an important Jewish value, Tikkun Olam (healing the world) as well as describing conditions in the villages of Darfur. Students of all grade levels including senior congregants from our Tikkun Olam committee came together to decorate potholders that were sold before and after Religious School. All the proceeds will go towards the purchase of solar cookers for the villages of Darfur. |
