Congo’s culture of impunity – where perpetrators of sexual violence go unpunished – is a destructive force for Congo’s women and girls. JWW is working with the South Kivu Women’s Media Association (AFEM-SK) to train 46 women journalists recruited from rural areas in South Kivu – those most affected by insecurity in eastern Congo. AFEM trains these women as journalists specifically to report on incidents of sexual and gender-based violence, women’s rights and human rights more generally.
Watch AFEM’s director, Chouchou Namegabe, speak about the conflict in DRC!
AFEM’s journalists have become well-respected internationally and notable within Congo, often exposing crimes that other journalists are afraid to cover. These women are particularly vulnerable to discrimination and sexual violence. Adding their voice in the widespread radio media is essential – providing the Congolese public with honest, transparent reporting about the real situation for women on the ground in the East and combating the culture of impunity!
